Debbie Wilson

I tell my students they have everything they need to excel if they’re willing to put in the effort. I model this for my students and share.

What is your favorite part of being an educator?

Building connections, unconditional love, and sharing my LOVE of learning together- WITH my students as a family. Student Interest + State/Local Mandates = Knowledge that sticks. Extra training (e.g. NASA Trained Teacher, 1st Amazon Rainforest Educators Con.-in the Amazon, among other trainings) as a motivator and impact within their learning. After each unit we discuss using a poster of a toddler in an astronaut’s suit- caption- “Learn all YOU can now for who knows how far you'll go!"

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience.

In the middle of a small reading group when the Technology person came to fix my computer. I asked my first graders to continue while I explained the issues. When I returned, I sat back in “AWE”, with goosebumps, as one of the students had taken charge, asking the questions. They did an amazing job of taking over the learning/teaching. Later discussion with the group showcased a willingness to take control of their own learning- A classroom with an openness of self-learning!

What would you do with the $25,000?

The money would be used to: 1) design and run a regional drone competition for Middle Schools; 2) help to put on a regional STEAM Festival; 3) purchase materials and equipment to present at regional school STEM/STEAM nights.
